THE USE OF VERSE, HADITH AND ARABI PHRASES IN JIHAD-NAME OF MUSTAFA SAFİ EFENDİ

Abstract

Verses, hadiths and Arabi phrases, which are among the sources of the ancient Turkish literature, were used in the works by the chroniclers who recorded the wars, conquests and victories of the Ottoman Empire. Historians who recorded the ghaza and conquests of the Ottomans, who acted with the understanding of jihad, in order to spread Islam and expand their lands, wrote to their works with verses from the Quran and Hz. Muhammed. They brought evidences with the words of the Prophet and decorated their works with Arabic phrases. Verses, hadiths and Arabi phrases in conquest-names, in which a ghaza or conquest is told from the beginning to the end; It has also enriched the descriptions and narratives in the works written in this genre. Conquest-names in Ottoman literature mostly was written in the XVI. century. The work named Jihad-nâme, which is the subject of our study, was also written in this century and Sultan III. It was submitted to Murad. The author of the work, Mustafa Sâfî Efendi, is not an ordinary writer. The author, who was educated at the madrasa, also has in-depth knowledge of Islamic sources. In his work, Sâfî Efendi used more than two hundred verses, about twenty hadiths and Arabî phrases. Describing the conquests of Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha in the Mediterranean, the author enriched his work with Islamic sources and Arabian phrases. Quotations made from these sources removed the work from monotony and formed a basis for the events mentioned in Jihad-nâme. In this study, in which Mustafa Sâfî Efendi's Jihad-nâme was taken as a source, the effects of verse, hadith quotations and Arabi phrases on works of conquest-name type were examined.
